The present paper deals with the case of Hz. Ruqayyah, a little daughter of Imam al-Husayn, in historical sources. Her name was Fatimah, and her mother was Um Is'haaq, daughter of Talhah b. Abd Allah. Born in Medina in 57 AH/ 676 CE, she was one of the Ashura captives who were taken to Damascus. She breathed her last there owing to intense grief at the sight of her father's severed head laid before him in the month Safar 61 AH/ 680 CE. Her honorific title Ruqayyah was first mentioned in certain history books (eg, in Maqtal al-Ruqayyah as part of Muntakhab al-tawaarikh) that were written in the 2nd/8th century.
